Top Box
A motorcycle top box, also known as a tail box or top case, is a lockable, hard-shell container that mounts to a rack on the rear of a motorcycle. It provides secure, waterproof storage for items like groceries, a helmet, or rain gear, making it a convenient luggage option for commuters and tourers alike.
Hard-shell top box materials
The primary materials for hard-shell top boxes are plastic and aluminum. Both materials are waterproof but have different characteristics.
Plastic (ABS or Polypropylene)
- Best for: Daily commuting and road-focused touring.
- Pros:
- Weight: Lighter than aluminum, which helps maintain the bike's handling and stability.
- Cost: Generally more budget-friendly.
- Damage: Cracks if damaged, but often less expensive to replace.
- Aesthetics: A wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors are available.
- Cons: Not as rugged as aluminum for off-road use.
